The IND vs ENG 1st Test in Hyderabad brought back memories of the England vs New Zealand 2019 World Cup final on Thursday.
England, who are struggling against the Indian spinners at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium on the opening day, were gifted runs via overthrows.
The incident happened in the 47th over when Jasprit Bumrah was bowling.
Stokes, hit the delivery to deep square leg for a couple of runs but a poor throw from the Indian fielder saw the ball going for four overthrows.

Why initially it looked that the visitors will be awarded 6 runs, it was given five as replays showed the batters hadn’t crossed on their way to the second run.
According to Law 19.8, “If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be any runs for penalties awarded to either side, and the allowance for the boundary, and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act.”
The umpires made the correct decision by awarding 5 runs to England. However, in the controversial World Cup 2019 final, the rule was not adhered to when a deflected throw from Stokes’ bat was incorrectly granted 6 runs instead of 5.
The error proved to be crucial as England went on to win the final in Super Over.
