As expected, Team India beat USA in their third Group A game in the T20 World Cup on Wednesday, and have now qualified for the Super 8 stage. Chasing only 111 on a Nassau County wicket that assisted the pacers, India reached the target in 18.2 overs with seven wickets to spare. And the two architects of the win in IND vs USA were Suryakumar Yadav and Arshdeep Singh. While Surya scored 50 in 49, Arshdeep bowled a brilliant spell of 4/9 in the first innings.
ICC Pre-decides Seedings, IND vs AUS on Jun 24
And with this win, Rohit Sharma & Co. have sealed their berth in Super 8 of the tournament. They join Australia and South Africa, as the two had already qualified. But despite five spots still vacant, India is all set to play Australia on June 24. Ask why? The reason is that ICC had already pre-decided the Super 8 seedings — with India as A1 and Australia as B2.
Apart from these two, Afghanistan will also be there in India’s group. The last spot will either go to Bangladesh or the Netherlands.
Where is the Confusion in Super 8 Seedings? T20 World Cup Format Explained
The T20 World Cup 2024 started with 20 teams, and will be left with eight teams in the next round. Top two teams from each of the four groups go through the Super 8 Stage. And from there on the top two sides go through the semis. As far as the Super 8 groups are concerned, ICC went with the same seedings for the teams, as they were in the league stages.
Now, for the Super 8, the two groups would look like — A1, B2, C1, D2 and A2, B1, C2, D1. So since A1 and B2 are already decided, India and Australia are scheduled to lock horns on June 24 in St. Lucia. But this system leaves little scope of making alterations.

What Happens in Case of an Upset?
It’s all messed up. Seedings have been allotted on the basis of a team’s rankings.
India – A1, Pakistan – A2
England – B1, Australia – B2
New Zealand – C1, West Indies – C2
South Africa – D1, Sri Lanka – D2
If West Indies tops the Group C, they would still remain C2. Likewise, if South Africa finish second in their group, they would still be D1 for the Super 8. In case, any of the seedings don’t make it to the next stage, then their seeding will be awarded to the team making the Super 8. For example, if New Zealand don’t go through from Group C, and Afghanistan finish second in the group, then the latter would be the new C1 for Super 8.
