In a startling outburst that has set the cricketing world abuzz, former India and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batter Manoj Tiwary has lashed out at Gautam Gambhir, accusing the former KKR captain of taking undue credit for the team’s success during their IPL triumphs in 2012 and 2014. Speaking to News18 Bangla, Tiwary didn’t mince his words as he questioned the narrative that Gambhir single-handedly led KKR to glory, suggesting instead that it was a carefully managed PR effort that placed Gambhir at the forefront.
What did Manoj Tiwary say on Gautam Gambhir?
“Gambhir didn’t guide KKR to the title single-handedly as we all performed as a unit,” Tiwary said. “Jacques Kallis, Sunil Narine, and I all contributed to the cause. But who took the credit? There is an environment and PR that allows him to take all the credit.”
Tiwary’s frustration is understandable. In the 2012 season, he played a crucial role, scoring 260 runs in 16 matches, including hitting the winning runs in the final. He made 9 runs off three balls, making KKR clinch their maiden title against CSK with two balls remaining.
Yet, it’s Gambhir’s leadership that is often credited for the team’s success, while the contributions of players like Kallis, Narine, and Tiwary himself seem to be overlooked. It’s a narrative that has persisted over the years, and Tiwary’s comments suggest he’s had enough.
“Gambhir is a Hypocrite”—Tiwary pulls no punches
Tiwary didn’t stop at questioning Gambhir’s IPL legacy. He went a step further, calling the current India team head coach a “hypocrite” and accusing him of surrounding himself with people who won’t challenge his authority. In particular, Tiwary took aim at the coaching staff selections made under Gambhir’s influence, alleging favouritism.
“Gautam Gambhir is a hypocrite. He doesn’t do what he says. The captain (Rohit Sharma) is from Mumbai, Abhishek Nayar is from Mumbai. Rohit has been pushed to the forefront. There is no one to speak for Jalaj Saxena. He performs well but keeps quiet,” Tiwary said.
