Ex-Indian cricketer and broadcaster, Sanjay Manjrekar has recommended Akash Deep for a spot in India’s playing XI for the highly anticipated IND vs AUS third Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The former India cricketer believes the Bengal pacer could replace Harshit Rana, who impressed in his debut Test in Perth but had a relatively average performance in the second Test in Adelaide.
India has heavily relied on Jasprit Bumrah, who has been the leading wicket-taker in the five-match series. Manjrekar feels that bringing Akash Deep into the team could provide support to Jasprit Bumrah, especially if the pitch at the Gabba turns out to be as challenging as expected.
Bowling attack under pressure after Adelaide loss
India’s bowling attack is under scrutiny after Australia’s commanding 10-wicket victory in the second Test. The team needs to make a strong comeback in the third Test to keep their World Test Championship (WTC) hopes alive.
Manjrekar pointed out, “This bowling lineup with Bumrah, Siraj, Harshit Rana, or Akash Deep may seem a bit weak, especially if the pitch in Brisbane is flat like in Adelaide. But if the pitch offers pace, it could work well.”

Concerns over Siraj and Harshit’s form
In the first two Tests, India relied on Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Harshit as their main pace attack. While Nitish Reddy has been decent as a backup, Siraj and Harshit struggled in Adelaide, raising concerns among Indian fans. Some are even calling for the return of Mohammed Shami, who has been in good form in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024. The third Test starts on Saturday, December 14, and India will look to learn from their defeat in Adelaide and make a strong comeback in Brisbane.
