India Captain: Former ex-chief selector and India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, has launched a scathing attack on the BCCI, Selectors and the Team Management for having no proper vision. He claimed that Shikhar Dhawan’s elevation as the captain of the team back in 2021 during the tour of Sri Lanka showcased lack of vision from the selectors.
“The unfortunate part is that the selectors I have seen over the last six-seven years neither have the vision, deep knowledge about the game or cricketing sense. They made Shikhar Dhawan India captain (when tours overlapped and main players were unavailable); it is where you can groom the future captain,” Vengsarkar told Hindustan Times.

Coming to the current scenario, captain Rohit Sharma has been facing flack not leading India successfully in last year’s Asia Cup, T20 World Cup and the recently concluded WTC Finals. There are talks which suggest that the team management is on the lookout for a new skipper.
Rohit Sharma will lead the men in Blue in the Asia Cup and the 2023 World Cup, but even if India performs well and the BCCI continue to have their trust on Rohit, in the grand scheme of things, the potential candidates should be groomed to lead from the front when the time arrives.

“You haven’t groomed anybody. You just play as it comes. You talk about the richest cricket board in the world, where is the bench strength? Just having IPL, earning crores of rupees in media rights, it should not be the only achievement,” Vengsarkar said.
“In the West Zone side for Duleep Trophy, we have picked Priyank Panchal (33) as captain when you could have groomed a future India player like Ruturaj Gaikwad. That is what I call a lack of vision for the game.”
Up next for India is to find the suitable candidate who can tick all the boxes. Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Jasrprit Bumrah are all next in line to take up the captaincy.
