Equal points, Unequal fates: How did RCB qualify for IPL 2024 Playoffs over CSK?

The IPL 2024 playoffs are set for a thrilling encounter as RCB, fueled by their winning momentum, takes on the challenge of progressing further in the tournament.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) staged a remarkable comeback in IPL 2024, securing a playoff berth despite having the same number of points as three other teams. Here’s how they achieved this dramatic feat:

RCB Resurgence in IPL 2024

After a disastrous start with six losses in first 7 games, RCB, under Faf du Plessis‘ leadership, found their winning touch with six consecutive victories in IPL 2024 league stage. They capped off their resurgence with a convincing 27-run victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their final league match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Numbers Game: Why NRR Became Hero

While CSK needed to lose by no more than 17 runs to qualify, their chase of 219 ended at 191/7. This loss, combined with RCB’s superior Net Run Rate (NRR), made the difference.

RCB finished with an NRR of +0.459, edging out CSK (+0.392), Delhi Capitals (-0.377), and Lucknow Super Giants (-0.667) – all tied on points (14 points). NRR, a metric that considers both runs scored and conceded, acts as a tiebreaker in such scenarios.

Setting Stage: Strong start by RCB

Batting first, RCB capitalized on a solid opening partnership between Faf du Plessis (54) and Virat Kohli (47). Rajat Patidar (41 off 23) and Cameron Green (38* off 17) further propelled the score to a formidable 218 – a target that proved too much for CSK.

CSK spirited effort falls short

Despite a valiant attempt by Ravindra Jadeja (42* off 22) and MS Dhoni (25 off 13) in the late stages, CSK couldn’t bridge the gap. This loss marks their first time finishing outside the top four in three consecutive seasons, a significant downturn for the usually dominant team.

Historic Turnaround for RCB

This victory signifies RCB’s second-best winning streak in IPL history, falling just short of their record-breaking seven consecutive wins in 2011 (where they ended up losing the final to CSK). The fightback not only secured them a playoff spot but also displayed their newfound resilience and potential.

The IPL 2024 playoffs are set for a thrilling encounter as RCB, fueled by their winning momentum, takes on the challenge of progressing further in the tournament.
