After leading England Women in 199 matches, legendary captain Heather Knight has stepped down from the captaincy. Knight was the leader who guided the team to a historic home World Cup victory in 2017 and two other ICC tournament finals.
Under her captaincy, England Women secured 134 wins, making her the second-most successful captain in the team’s history.
Clare Connor, ECB Managing Director of England Women and Deputy Chief Executive Officer, said: “Heather has been an outstanding leader as England Women’s captain. She has led the team by example, serving as a role model off the pitch and delivering crucial runs on it—often in the toughest conditions.”

One of the best captains for England Women, Heather Knight had a remarkable captaincy career across all formats, leading the team with consistency and resilience. In ODIs, she captained 94 matches, winning 62 and losing 29, with a win percentage of 65.95%, making her, as mentioned, the second-most successful captain in England Women’s history. Also, when it comes to T20I leadership, she was even more impressive, with 96 matches, 71 wins, and a win percentage of 73.95%. Everything was going well, but a few disappointing performances by the team under her captaincy in last year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE and the recent Ashes in Australia have led the ECB to move towards a captaincy transition.
