Dawid Malan, England’s top scorer in the disappointing 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, is taking a proactive approach to his cricketing future. Despite leading the team in runs in the mega event that was held in India, Malan was surprisingly omitted from the subsequent white-ball tour of the West Indies.
With his England selection status uncertain, the 36-year-old batsman is stepping into the coaching arena. Malan will be assisting Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC), working with both the first and second teams. This new venture isn’t entirely unexpected, as Malan has openly considered coaching as a post-playing career option for some time.
“I’m not looking too far ahead,” Malan said, acknowledging the potential end of his international career. “I’ve made peace with that and I’m exploring a different path for the next few years of my career.“
While hopeful of representing England in the upcoming T20 World Cup, Malan is realistic about the team’s direction. “They might want to go in a different direction, and that’s fine,” he said, respecting the selectors’ decisions. However, he maintains confidence in his abilities, adding, “I still feel I’m good enough, but selection is out of my control. It’s something I suggested because I’ve been thinking for a while about what I want to do after I’m finished.“
Malan’s coaching role signifies a potential career shift. This move not only allows him to share his knowledge but also paves the way for a smooth transition into coaching after retirement.
