According to a report in the Telegraph, McCullum is a favorite for the Test role because of his aggressive and fearless mentality. “As test captain McCullum favored an aggressive approach, which chimes with how both Ben Stokes, England’s new Test captain, and Rob Key, the new managing director, like to play the game. His track record of rebuilding a test nation could be particularly attractive after England’s run of one victory in 17 tests.”
Interestingly, McCullum has no experience in coaching a team at a first-class level. Yet Rob Key is keen to have him for the role of the Test team due to his stellar record as captain of the New Zealand team.
If the KKR coach gets the role of Test team coach, then his first assignment will be against his own team New Zealand. England will host the WTC champions for a three-match Test series starting from June 02 2022.
England Test Team Coach: Why McCullum has emerged as the favorite to be the coach?
- The KKR coach played the game positively and aggressively, which inspired New Zealand’s revival in all formats of the game since 2014
- The former New Zealand captain also took his team to his first World Cup final in 2015 and finished his Test career playing 101 matches
- The KKR coach has also been widely credited for changing the landscape of New Zealand’s Test team as captain from 2013 to 2016
- England’s new Test captain Ben Stokes is a similar firebrand personality like McCullum and the duo could form a dream combination
- England have hit an all-time low by winning just one Test match in 17 games that they have played.
- Eoin Morgan, who considers McCullum has his inspiration has apparently told Key to have him on board as England’s coach in red-ball cricket

England Test Team Coach: Gary Kirsten to be the coach of England’s white-ball formats?
Kirsten, who was the frontrunner to be England’s next Test coach is reportedly now in contention to be the team’s white-ball coach. The former South African player has a solid experience of coaching India and South Africa teams and has had a successful stint. He was also about to be England’s coach two times but lost out to Trevor Bayliss and later to Chris Silverwood.
Key reportedly will finalize England’s coaches for both formats later this week. The white-ball coach role is a three-way battle between Kirsten, Simon Katich, and Paul Collingwood.
