England T20 WC Squad – T20 World Cup 2022: In what is a huge blow for England, in-form superstar Jonny Bairstow has been ruled out of the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. Bairstow was named in the squad just hours earlier in an official ECB announcement but now has to withdraw after a ‘freak accident’ while playing golf. England named their 18-member squad for T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia including three travelling reserves. Jason Roy suffered a torn calf muscle and would have been fit for the World Cup but has been dropped after struggling with form over the past few months. There is no Jofra Archer either as he continues to recover from injury.

Ben Stokes has returned to the T20 fold after more than a year. Jos Buttler will lead the side. Furthermore, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes have also returned from injuries to feature in the squad.

The biggest shocker that came was the ruling out of Jonny Bairstow. The English batter was included in the squad but suffered a freak accident while playing golf. The Yorkshire batter suffered a lower limb injury and has thus been ruled out of the third Test and the T20 World Cup. For the third Test, Ben Duckett has been selected while Bairstow’s replacement for T20 World Cup will be decided in the coming days.

England became only the second team to announce their T20 World Cup squad after hosts Australia. There were no big surprises in the squad. Reece Topley with a brilliant show in India and South Africa series, has been added to the main squad for T20 World Cup. England will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Afghanistan on October 22.

The same squad with a few additions and injury absentees will travel to Pakistan for the 7-match series. Moeen Ali is likely to captain as Buttler recovers from injury.

The biggest disappointment for England will be Jofra Archer’s absence. The fast bowler has missed over one year of action due to an elbow injury and later a back injury. While he was tipped to return for T20 World Cup, his recovery isn’t promising. Hence, he has been ruled out.

Jason Roy had a torrid time with the bat in the series against India. He followed it up with three ducks in four innings in The Hundred. He is replaced by Phil Salt in the side. Dawid Malan is likely to partner with Jos Buttler at the top of the order.

The England team management have decided to put their faith in experience for the tournament. The 2016 World finalists have a host of their players returning from injury. Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood will head into the T20 World Cup without a T20I game under their belt. Stokes will miss the Pakistan series while Woakes and Wood will feature in the enlarged squad.

Liam Livingstone and Chris Jordan will also miss the Pakistan series with injuries while Buttler is also a doubt as he recuperates from a calf injury. Reece Topley retains his place after stellar series against India at home, though Richard Gleeson and Tymal Mills are only amongst the reserves.
