Jason Roy had made 20 off 15 balls opening the batting alongside Jos Buttler against South Africa, before hobbling his way through the rest of the run, and also immediately dropped to the ground, throwing his head back in a mix of pain and frustration. Roy was in tears as he was helped off the pitch to the dressing room, and was later seen in crutches after the end of the game. With Roy ruled out, James Vince has been added to the squad as a replacement, having been with the squad as one of the traveling reserves.
Vince has been one of the standout performers in the format in 2021, scoring 1197 runs in 38 games this year. His strike rate of 139.02 and average of 35 boast of his sheer quality and the Hampshire star could very well slot in at the top of the order.
England, however, have Sam Billings as one of the reserve batsmen in the squad. The wicket-keeper can open the batting but is more comfortable in the middle, which could see Jonny Bairstow move to open the batting with Jos Buttler.

England are also struggling in the death overs with specialist Tymal Mills out of the T20 World Cup. His replacement in the XI, Mark wood was hit for 47 against South Africa, but it is unlikely that Wood would be dropped to the bench. In such a case, Morgan has David Willey and Reece Topley available in the ranks, who could fill as the seam bowling alternative. Topley and Willey both provide a left-arm pace option to Korgan, with Woakes and Jordan both being right-arm quicks.
Probable England Playing XI vs New Zealand: Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Dawid Malan, Eoin Morgan, Liam Livingstone, Sam Billings, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Mark Wood, Adil Rashid.
