ENG vs SA 2nd Test Highlights: Ben Stokes, James Anderson complete REVENGE as England thrash South Africa by an innings and 85 runs – Check Highlights
England hammered South Africa by an innings and 85 runs to win the second Test at Old Trafford inside three
days on Saturday. The victory, which followed South Africa’s almost as crushing innings and 12-run win in the first Test at Lord’s, meant England levelled the threematch series at 1-1.South Africa, 141-3 in their second innings at tea, then saw England captain Ben Stokes remove both Rassie van der Dussen (41) and Keegan Petersen (42) for their interval scores.
The Proteas, the World Test Championship leaders, then collapsed against the new ball as they lost their last five wickets for seven runs in 31 balls en route to being dismissed for 179. Recalled seamer Ollie Robinson took 4-43 in 15.1 overs and 40-year-old England great James Anderson 3-30.
Anderson had earlier marked becoming the first man to play 100 Tests on home soil (97 in England, three in Wales) by taking three wickets in South Africa’s meagre first innings 151 after Proteas captain Dean Elgar surprisingly decided to bat first in bowler-friendly conditions.
This match was a personal triumph for player of the match Stokes, who made 103 — his first century as England captain — in a total of 415-9 declared that also featured wicketkeeper Ben Foakes’s Test-best 113 not out. Stokes has now won five of his six Tests as skipper since succeeding Joe Root as England’s permanent captain.

Follow ENG SA 2ND TEST LIVEEarlier, Stokes and Foakes shared an impressive partnership of 173 after coming together with England wobbling at 147-5 after a double strike by fast bowler Anrich Nortje.
By recalling Simon Harmer as a second spinner to their attack, in the hope the pitch at Old Trafford would offer more turn as the game went on, South Africa had almost been obliged to bat first upon winning the toss.
But off-spinner Harmer, a prolific wicket-taker with county side Essex, and slow left-armer Keshav Maharaj could only manage three late-order wickets between them for a combined 151 runs in 45.4 overs Harmer’s first delivery on Friday, a full toss, was stroked through the covers for four by Foakes and, three balls later, Stokes swept him for six.

Left-handed batsman Stokes, 34 not out at lunch, completed a 101-ball fifty when he lofted Harmer for six in classic style. Stokes went into the 80s with a straight six off Maharaj, before Foakes completed a well-made fifty off 116 balls.
And for all the talk of a new ‘Bazball’ aggressive style, the 31-year-old Stokes’s well-paced innings — his 12th hundred in 85 Tests and fourth against South Africa — was also a triumph of largely orthodox batting.
Foakes then added to the Proteas’ woes by going to his second hundred in 16 Tests when the 29-year-old late cut fast bowler Nortje for a ninth four in 206 balls faced.
