What was the incident?
In the training session Bairstow was asked to carry teammate Sam Curran on his shoulder. Bairstow then left the training session at Bristol’s Seat Unique Stadium on Tuesday with ice packs and strapping around his left knee.
Bairstow was walking in discomfort on his way back to the locker room but no decision has been made over his participation against the Proteas in the first T20 on Wednesday. With back-to-back games on successive nights, it would be no surprise to see Bairstow left out of the opener if there was any lingering discomfort.
Harry Brooks to replace Bairstow
- Should injury be the case, Phil Salt and Harry Brook would continue in the middle order having lined up against India while Bairstow was rested.
- While Salt looks a definite addition, Brooks would be a welcome addition to the team having missed out on playing time against India.
- Bairstow was a key member of the England side that won the final Test against India at the start of the month
- He will leave a big hole if England are going to miss him for a long time, as there is no time scale for his return.

England look for opening win in T20I series
The T20I series comes days after England and South Africa shared the spoils in the ODI series. England skipper Jos Buttler will be in search of his first series win since appointed as permanent captain of the side. Both teams will be looking to ride high on their recent outings.
England lost the first ODI against South Africa, but quickly bounced back to win the second in resounding fashion. They bowled South Africa out for 81 and won the match. A win in the first T20I would represent an ideal start for both the teams.
