New Zealand and England played out perhaps the greatest ODI game in the 2019 World Cup final, as the Kane Williamson and Co. lost by the barest of margins, with England lifting the trophy on boundary count. However, after the game, the boundary count rule was officially scrapped meaning that should the England vs New Zealand game on Wednesday remain a tie after the Super Over, the team that hit the most boundaries will not be awarded the win.

As per the amended laws, the contest will head to a Super Over, where a total of three batsmen have six balls to score as many runs as possible if the game is tied after the innings of both teams. However, the change in the rule is that, should the Super Over be tied, they will keep holding Super Overs until one team wins, with batsmen dismissed not allowed to bat again.

A similar incident happened in the IPL last year in a game between the Mumbai Indians and the Punjab Kings. After the two teams were tied at the end of their innings, they faced off in the Super Over, which also ended in a tie. The next super over however did not see the players used in the first Super Over bat or bowl, and Punjab prevailed in that clash.

Speaking ahead of the T20 World Cup semi-final, Kane Williamson said, “It was an amazing game to be a part of and certainly for all the guys when it does come up in conversation, it’s looked back on fondly, and they appreciate that experience, although, at the time, the aftermath was very difficult to understand and perhaps didn’t make a lot of sense.”

“But that is what it is. You sign up, you play by the rules, and you move on, and you look forward to the next challenges. As a group they continue to come thick and fast and that’s where we like to put our focus. Not long after that was some test cricket focus. And now we’re at a T20 World Cup, and the cricket just continues to roll on.”
