It was in the sixth over when Jack Leach hurt his head. While stopping a boundary by Devon Conway in the sixth over, Leach, who was giving a chase from the backward point, landed awkwardly on his head.
He looked in pain, holding his neck and head and was treated by the physiotherapist on the sidelines. Unable to continue, he walked off the field.

Lates, England & Wales Cricket Board confirmed that Leach was diagnosed with concussion symptoms and will be under observation.

“Jack Leach has symptoms of concussion following his head injury whilst fielding. As per concussion guidelines, he has been withdrawn from this Test. We will confirm a concussion replacement in due course,” ECB said in a statement.
Later, it was confirmed that Matt Parkinson will be the concussion substitute. Parkinson was not initially included in the Team for the first Test. Hence, he will only join the team by the end of the day or on Day 2.
As for the match, Matty Potts and James Anderson combined to blow away New Zealand. The two bagged five wickets in the first session as New Zealand managed just 39 runs for 6 wickets. Captain Kane Williamson also had a poor run.
