ENG vs NZ: Chris Woakes’ return from INJURY further delayed, to miss 1st Test against New Zealand in June
Chris Woakes injury – The England pacer suffered the injury on West Indies tour and had to pull out of IPL 2022. He was also part of the contingent that played in the 4-0 humiliation during the Ashes while also being part of the England team that played in the T20 World Cup. The consequences of the tight schedule now mean that he will miss the opener against the Kiwis.
No need for surgery – Although Woakes will miss the opening Test there is no need for any surgery. That could see him return for the second Test at Trent Bridge. The second Test could serve as the perfect occasion for him to return unless he is got to go under the knife.

England’s injury crisis – In the recent West Indies tour England were dealt a blow as James Anderson and Stuart Broad were absent, plus injuries on tour for Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood, forced Woakes into playing three Tests in three weeks in the Caribbean. The series capped a tough winter in Test cricket for England that saw Woakes take just 11 wickets in five matches.
WTC points up for stake as England struggle with injuries –While England struggle with injuries, they will have to deal with the disappointment of being bottom of the standings. So far in the 13 matches of the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle England have won only once while losing seven and drawing four of their matches. Defending champions New Zealand are also dealing with similar crisis as they sit sixth with just two wins in six Test matches of the current cycle.
