Toss Report

Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah won the toss and opted to bat first against Eoin Morgan’s England side in their 2nd game of the Super 12 match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 here at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. No changes in England side from the winning team of West Indies match while Bangladesh have made one change in the playing XI Shoriful comes in for Saifuddin.

Teams:

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Mohammad Naim, Liton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah(c), Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan(w), Mahedi Hasan, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Nasum Ahmed

England (Playing XI): Jason Roy, Jos Buttler(w), Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan(c), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Tymal Mills

Both team captains at the toss

Eoin Morgan: We have been good at chasing, the wicket looks good, played here during the IPL. We need to adapt, no team changes for us. The scars of past (England’s loss against Bangladesh in 2015 ODI World Cup) motivate you for the future. The focus today is what we can do.

Mahmudullah: We are going to bat first. The wicket looks good, so we want to put a good total. We have one change. Shoriful comes in for Saifuddin. We got three spinners playing, so we need to restrict them. This is a new game, so we need to play well.

Pitch Report by Dale Steyn

Doesn’t have much grass on it, looks a bit dry, so should be a good contest between the bat and ball. Spinners might get some help as it’s a pretty dry surface

Bangladesh struggling, lost to SL – Bangladesh has blown hot and cold so far in the tournament. They faced an upset in the opening game against Scotland, having gone down by 6 runs and thrashed minnows Papua New Guinea by record 84 runs to advance into the Super 12 round. However, their batting woes, over dependency on Shakib Al Hasan, and lack of wicket-taking penetration in the bowling attack were on full display against Sri Lanka. Bangladesh faced 5 wickets defeat against Dasun Shanaka’s side despite putting a good total of 171/4 on the board.

Lackluster batting lineup – The Bangla Tigers haven’t been at their best so far in the tournament. In all four games played so far, Bangladesh hasn’t managed to get through the powerplay wicketless. The likes of Liton Das & M Naim have failed to provide a solid start while seasoned campaigner Mushfiqur Rahim too looked off-color before Sri Lanka’s game. He slammed an unbeaten 57 off 37 deliveries and needs to carry the momentum forward as the tournament progresses.

Over dependency on Shakib Al Hasan – Bangladesh’s batting lineup more or less revolves around the star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. He is the third leading run-scorer in the tournament and second for his side so far. Averaging 29.50 with the bat, Shakib has amassed 118 runs in four innings.

When it comes to bowling, Shakib has picked up 11 wickets and leads the chart of most wickets in the tournament. Mushfiqur Rahim, who is the second leading wicket-taker for BAN has picked up just 6 wickets which shows how overly dependent Mahmudullah’s side is on Shakib.

Shakib Al Hasan in T20 World Cup 2021-

  • With the bat – 118 runs in 4 innings, average – 29.50
  • With the ball – 11 wickets in 4 innings, economy – 4.73

Bangladesh Probable Playing XI:

Mohammad Naim, Liton Das/Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah (c), Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan (wk), Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Nasum Ahmed , Mustafizur Rahman

England bowled out WI for 55 in the opener: England was off to a flyer in their opening fixture against Windies, skittling them up at just 55 runs and securing a convincing 6 wickets win with record 70 balls to spare. It was a repeat of 2016 final which England lost after Carlos Braithwaite slammed 4 consecutive sixes off the final over & England responded in style. The victory also marked England’s first-ever win over West Indies in T20 World Cups.

All bowlers in the superb form: With none of the bowlers conceding more than 6 runs an over against Windies, England looked top-notch, especially in the bowling department. While Adil Rashid returned with an impressive 4-2 in his quota of four overs, Tymal Mills and Moeen Ali shared two wickets each. The other two quicks – Woakes & Jordan too picked up a wicket each in the opener.

Adil Rashid was excellent even in the warmup games and returned with 3-18 against New Zealand in England’s second warmup game.

Moeen Ali – a key allrounder in playing XI: In Ben Stokes’s absence, Moeen Ali has become a key for Eoin Morgan’s side in recent times. Apart from chipping in with a couple of wickets with his right arm off break, Moeen Ali also shares the responsibility of scoring quick runs with the bat coming up the middle order. The English all-rounder has the same responsibility in the national side which he has for his IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings.

Moeen slammed an unbeaten 43 off just 20 deliveries in the first warmup game against India and returned with 2-17 with the ball against Windies in the opening fixture.

England Probable Playing XI:

Jos Buttler (wk), Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Eoin Morgan (c), Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Tymal Mills
