England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have announced their current Test head coach, Brendon McCullum will take over as the all-format coach starting from January 2025. The move comes after England’s white-ball coach, Matthew Motts, resigned following a horrible ODI World Cup 2023 and underwhelming T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.
Big things ahead
Defending champions in both, England finished 7th in the ODI World Cup and were able to beat just the Netherlands, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Something similar happened in the T20 World Cup. Although they made the semifinals but lost all three tough matches they played against the tough teams (India, Australia, and South Africa).
With three major ICC events coming (ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, T20 World Cup in 2026, and ODI World Cup in 2027), the ECB has decided that it’s the right time to announce McCullum as the all-format coach. Most people agree that the former New Zealand captain has changed England’s Test team for good and hope he’ll do the same for the white ball.
“I’m delighted that Brendon (McCullum) has chosen to do both roles now with England I believe we are incredibly fortunate that a coach of his quality is prepared to commit wholeheartedly to English cricket. Being able to align all teams now is particularly exciting and we look forward to taking on all challenges that come our way.” ECB Managing Director of Men’s Cricket Rob Key said.
McCullum ready for the challenge
McCullum would have a lot on his plate. He was already targeting the big India home and Australia away (Ashes) test series but will now have to focus on the ICC Champions Trophy as well in 2025. The expectations would be high, but it won’t be easy as England seem to be in a transition period and are currently rebuilding their white-ball.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team, and I’m excited to extend my role to include the white-ball sides. This new challenge is something I’m ready to embrace, and I’m eager to work closely with Jos (Buttler) and the team to build on the strong foundations that are already in place.” Brendon McCullum said.
