There is no spot for Shreyas Iyer in the India Cricket Team’s 16-member squad for India vs Bangladesh 1st Test series. Following his snub at the BCCI Central Contract, Iyer’s snub in red-ball cricket continues. The ace batter received a call-up under Gautam Gambhir’s reign in ODIs, but the coveted red-ball cricket continues to elude the batter. Despite his performances in the Duleep Trophy, Iyer has been yet again ignored by the BCCI Selection Committee.
Hopes were high for Shreyas Iyer to reunite with his former KKR mentor, now India head coach Gautam Gambhir. It was tipped that the star batter would be eased into India’s national team setup. But the first roadblock was encountered when Iyer was not selected in the 16-member squad for the 1st India vs Bangladesh Test series.
No Team India spot despite Duleep Trophy heroics
If domestic cricket performances are to be considered, then Shreyas Iyer’s heroics in the Duleep Trophy should have considered him a spot in the team. For India D, his first innings score wasn’t up to the mark. Iyer managed to score 9 runs in the first innings.
But come the second innings, Iyer took on himself to put out a rescue innings for India D. As the captain of the team, he led from the front. Iyer went on to hammer a blistering fifty. But his knock wasn’t enough to secure his spot in the team.
Iyer was snubbed from the National Team setup after failing to play domestic cricket for India. On his behalf, Iyer complained that he was injured. However, the BCCI Selection Committee decided to snub his central contract for the ongoing year. And even now his exile continues despite his performances in domestic cricket.
