DRS Dec 28: Rohit Sharma retirement after BGT, Virat Kohli again “clowned” by Australia & Sanju Samson axed?

Welcome to our special segment, DRS or the Daily Review System. In this, InsideSport will provide you with the top cricket stories from a day before that you might have missed in the hustle and bustle of your busy life.

The Boxing Day Test match has lived up to its billing thus far. After Day 1 that ebbed and flowed, something similar was seen on Day 2 as well. But the last 20 minutes of wildness put India’s ICC WTC Final aspirations up for a toss. Virat Kohli was in the thick of the action once again. After his shoulder-barging episode against Sam Konstas, Kohli looked in his element before an unwanted run-out damaged India big time. Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, continued his horrible form, leading to calls of his retirement from Test cricket. In other news, we had an update on the Sanju Samson vs Kerala Cricket Association episode. On that note, let us look at the top headline-making stories from Friday, December 27.

DRS, May 14: Gujarat Titans out of IPL 2024 English players leave, Matheesha Pathirana declared fit and no trouble in LSG paradise.

Sanju Samson vs KCA!

Sanju Samson’s exclusion from Kerala’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad was quite eye-raising. Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) seemingly left out their star player, who captained in SMAT, due to the fact that he didn’t show in a pre-tournament camp. Now, it is being reported that Sanju Samson has called for his availability but KCA is yet to take a call. “Sanju informed us over the last two days about his availability. However, a decision is pending as the full squad is already in Hyderabad,”KCA secretary Vinod S Kumar stated.

Rohit Sharma to retire after BGT?

Rumors are circulating everywhere about Rohit Sharma’s potential retirement from Test cricket due to his current form slump. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed these rumours as baseless. In an exclusive chat with InsideSport, a senior BCCI official stated that there have been no discussions with Rohit about retirement and that the focus remains on winning the ongoing Test series against Australia. Any decision on Rohit’s future will be made after the BGT series.

Virat Kohli attacked again!

It seems the Australian media, particularly a Western Australian newspaper, is having a field day at Virat Kohli’s expense. Just a short while ago, they were hailing him as the “King,” but now, following the infamous “shoulder barge” incident, he’s being mocked as a “clown.” Kohli’s had a dismal showing at the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, and the Aussie media is milking it for all it’s worth. A recent headline read “Karma,” implying that Kohli’s on-field antics led to his poor performance. After Day 1, they wrote clown for Kohli and continued with a similar approach after his failure on Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test.

Great News for KKR

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) should fret not about losing Mitchell Starc. The Australian southpaw was signed for almost Rs 25 crore and now is part of the Delhi Capitals (DC). But his replacement, signed for Rs 2.8 crore at the IPL 2025 auction, has been doing wonderful. Spencer Johnson, who was the highest wicket-taker in the T20I series against Pakistan, recently took 4/20 in a recent Big Bash League (BBL) game.

Overdependence on Jasprit Bumrah

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has called for Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep to be dropped from the Indian team for the 5th Test against Australia. Gavaskar criticized their poor performances, particularly in the Boxing Day Test, where they failed to provide adequate support to Jasprit Bumrah. He suggested that Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna should be included in the team instead, to strengthen India’s chances of winning the 5th Test. While Bumrah took 4/99 in the first innings at MCG, Siraj and Akash Deep combined to take 2 wickets for 216 runs. Both wickets were taken by Akash Deep.

Shaheen Afridi was dropped because….

Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi was surprisingly dropped from the Test squad against South Africa due to a dispute with the PCB selectors. Afridi was instructed to play a domestic four-day match, but he didn’t comply, which was seen as “disobedience.” Despite his strong commitment to Test cricket, Afridi was omitted from the squad. Notably, captain Babar Azam was given a reprieve for a similar offence.
