DRS, August 7: Vinesh Phogat creates history, PSL vs IPL causes trouble for PCB & Rohit Sharma injured?

Welcome to our special segment, DRS or the Daily Review System. In this, InsideSport will provide you with the top stories from a day before that you might have missed in the hustle and bustle of your busy life.

August 6 was a good day to be an Indian sports fan. Thousands of miles from the motherland, sportsmen and women shone as brightly as the sun. Vinesh Phogat and Neeraj Chopra stormed into the final of their respective events. The men’s hockey team couldn’t make it to the final despite taking a 1-0 lead in the semifinal against Germany. Luckily, there is still some chance for salvation as they take on Spain for a chance to win the bronze medal. In cricket, some big news came. The unrest in Bangladesh has created issues for Pakistan and the ICC. The PCB request to England has been shot down, and Indian skipper Rohit Sharma might miss the 3rd ODI on July 8.

Rohit Sharma injured?

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, might miss the India vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI due to injury. The opener, who’s top-scored for the Men in Blue in the first two matches, expressed some discomfort in his right thigh in practice and didn’t participate in the training session. Could he miss the series decided on July 8 in Colombo? Only time will tell.

Vinesh Phogat creates history

Vinesh Phogat has done the unthinkable. The 29-year-old has become India’s first-ever female pugilist to reach the final of the Olympics in any weight category. Vinesh started by beating the world’s best wrestler (Yui Susaki) in the last minute of the bout and then proceeded by defeating Oksana Livach and Yusneylys Guzmán in the quarterfinal and semifinal, respectively.

PCB loses 1st PSL vs IPL battle

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had dreamt of hosting the qualifiers and final for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 season in England. But that dream has been shot down. Citing the unavailability of grounds, England has denied PCB’s request. Does this have anything to do with the PSL 2025 classing with the IPL 2025? That’s uncertain.

Neeraj Chopra into the Final

With Neeraj Chopra there, you could virtually count one medal. The javelin star, who’s the reigning Olympic gold medalist, has made some start in Paris. Neeraj has qualified for the final by producing a season-best 89.34m throw. A podium finish is basically guaranteed, and given his form, another gold might be on the way.

India to host Women’s T20 World Cup?

Amid the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh, questions have been raised over the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. According to a report, the ICC is considering India as the host for the mega-event if Bangladesh isn’t able to host the tournament. The marquee event is scheduled for October 3–20 in Dhaka and Sylhet.

Gambhir the master tactician

Gautam Gambhir was one of the best players of spin during his time. As India’s head coach, he’s helping the side tackle host Sri Lanka in Colombo. Washington Sundar has heaped praise on Gambhir for helping the player tackle the Lankan spinners on the spin-friendly surface of the R. Premadasa Stadium.
