The Delhi Capitals‘ IPL 2024 campaign has hit a financial snag after being docked for a slow over rate offense in their match against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Rishabh Pant Faces Hefty Fine
Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has been hit hard by the IPL’s disciplinary committee. This marks the team’s second slow over rate offense of the season, resulting in a hefty fine of INR 24 lakhs for Pant. The IPL’s Code of Conduct mandates stricter penalties for repeat offenders.
Rest of Delhi Capitals Playing XI Share Burden
The remaining members of the Delhi Capitals playing eleven, including the designated Impact Player, haven’t escaped unscathed. They have each been fined INR 6 lakhs or 25% of their match fees, whichever amount is lower.
IPL statement
Indian Premier League in a statement said:
Rishabh Pant, the Delhi Capitals captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam on April 3.
As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Pant was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 6 lakhs or 25 percent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.
KKR’s Run Feast Overshadows DC Woes
The on-field action saw a dominant display by the Kolkata Knight Riders. They piled up a massive 272 runs on the scoreboard, the second-highest total in IPL history. This batting blitz helped KKR secure their third consecutive victory in the 2024 season.
Record-Breaking Threat Falls Short
KKR’s batting performance came close to surpassing the highest score in IPL history, set just a week prior at Hyderabad (277 runs). However, some tight bowling from Delhi Capitals’ Ishant Sharma in the final over prevented them from rewriting the record books.
Delhi Capitals Left Wanting
In reply to KKR’s monumental total, the Delhi Capitals faltered and fell short by a massive 106 runs. The financial penalty adds another layer of disappointment to their overall performance.
