Double Delight for RCB Fans! AB de Villiers could become mentor

Although it hasn't been officially confirmed yet, there is a chance that AB de Villiers, who made a significant contribution to the franchise's success, may work with Andy Flower as a mentor.

It’s a double delight for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) fans starting this Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024). If rumours are to believe, then IPL legend AB de Villiers could become mentor of the Faf du Plessis-led side. This comes after reports of Andy Flower becoming the new head coach of the Bengaluru-based franchise.

The RCB director of cricket operations, Mike Hesson, will stand down from his position on August 31 and be replaced by Andy Flower as head coach. Sanjay Bangar, the head coach of the RCB, and the remaining members of Hesson’s support staff are also expected to go.

According to the Cricbuzz, although it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, there is a chance that AB de Villiers, who made a significant contribution to the franchise’s success, may work with Andy Flower as a mentor.

As his two-year deal with the Lucknow Super Giants expired after the IPL 2023, Flower’s affiliation with them ended earlier this year. Former Australian head coach Justin Langer has already agreed to work for the Sanjiv Goenka-owned side.

Who all are going from RCB?

Since Hesson’s hiring in 2019, RCB has qualified for the playoffs three times in a row before missing in the 2023 campaign. As they work to win their first IPL championship, the franchise is now keen to implement new concepts. Their sizable fan base was discouraged as they were eliminated from the playoffs in the 2023 season.

It’s unclear what RCB will do going forward. It’s still unclear whether the franchise will choose a whole makeover or keep some of the support employees in their current positions.

With Faf Du Plessis and Virat Kohli at the top of the order, RCB excelled in IPL 2023. Faf Du Plessis scored the most runs for his team. With an average of 56.15 and a strike rate of 153.18, RCB captain smashed 730 runs in 14 games.

Virat Kohli did not only break the IPL record for most centuries, but he also became the first Indian batsman since 2016 to surpass 600 runs. Kohli scored 639 runs when batting at the top of the order, with an average of 53.29 and a strike rate of 139.82.

Dinesh Karthik failed to make an impression during the IPL this year, hitting only 140 runs while surpassing an undesirable record. Karthik, a former Indian wicketkeeper, currently holds the record for the most IPL ducks with 17, followed by Rohit Sharma with 16. Karthik has gotten out without bothering the scorers 17 times in his career.
