India Cricket Team Head Coach Gautam Gambhir holds a very poor record regarding red ball cricket. This comes as something that the BCCI would like to ponder after the conclusion of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Gambhir has just 3 Test wins under his belt as the head coach of the Indian team.
Now this raises the question – Does India need a specialist red ball coach? Under Gautam Gambhir, India comfortably won the two-match Test series on home soil. But things took a bad turn when the Kiwis toured India. The hosts were comprehensively defeated 3-0 by the Black Caps.
Guru Gambhir really Poor in Tests
Cut to Australia, India humiliated Australia in the Perth Test. But then the hosts struck back to win the Adelaide Test and the Melbourne Test. In the meantime, the Gabba Tests were adjudged as a draw. Now after the loss in the Boxing Day Test, Gambhir’s stats as a red ball coach will surely be raised.
And with India now going down 2-1 in the IND vs AUS Test series, India’s chances of making it to the WTC Finals have severely dwindled down. This can well be the first time that India has failed to make it to the Finals as they have done in the past 2 occasions.

Should India look for Red ball specialist coach?
India now has just 1 Test match remaining a lot of pressure will be on the team as well as the coach himself. While Gambhir has been pretty solid in white ball format, the same can’t be said in red-ball cricket though. A home win against Bangladesh won’t cut it. What is more depressing is India going down without a fight against the Kiwis at home.
On the other hand, it is expected that the top brass will keep their faith in Gambhir. It will, however, be the senior players who will bear the brunt of missing out on the WTC Finals. Players like Jadeja and Rohit are highly likely to be dropped or can retire from the longest format of the game after the conclusion of the BGT.
The BCCI is likely to shut down the idea of bringing in dual coaching in the setup. Conversations like these previously arose in the Rahul Dravid era but didn’t suffice. On the other, it is likely to be the case this time as well.
