From good to bad to worse – this is exactly how Rohit Sharma‘s form in 2024 has dipped in the longest format of the game. The Indian skipper’s poor form in the ongoing IND vs AUS Test series continued as he was dismissed for yet another single digit score, this time in the 2nd innings of IND vs AUS 4th Test in Melbourne. The Hitman started the year on a great note in a high-scoring series against England. However, following the T20 World Cup win, Sharma’s form has seen a sharp decline and has now ultimately cast aspersions on his future in the red-ball format.
Retirement coming soon for Rohit Sharma?
Rohit’s year started off on a postive note, with the batter scoring 455 runs in the series against England at home. With two centuries to his name in the five-match series, the Indian captain looked like he was in fine touch in the red-bal format despite having played more white-ball cricket prior to that series.
However, his form saw a sharp decline in the latter half of 2024, It all started with the series against Bangladesh, where he only managed to score 42 runs and had no half-centuries to his name. Next, he faltered against New Zealand, amassing just 80 runs in six innings including one half-century. If things weren’t already bad for Rohit at home, they went on to become more miserable in Australia as he witnessed consistent failures with the bat in Down Under. The Indian skipper copped severe criticism for neglecting domestic red-ball cricket despite his poor form, with many pointing out that he could have surely made good use of it to get back in shape.

Despite having a poor run in the series against Bangladesh and NZ, Rohit managed to secure a spot in India’s playing XI in the series against Australia. He made his way to the side in the IND vs AUS 2nd Test in Adelaide after missing the 1st Test due to personal reasons. He decided to bat at number 6, a position that he last batted at in 2018. However, the experiement backfired as he was dismissed for single digit scores. He continued to bat at the same position in the next Test at Brisbane and failed once again.
Rohit’s decision to return to the top-order in IND vs AUS 4th Test in Melbourne saw him fail yet again with the bat, managing to score just 9 runs with the bat in two innings. With his poor form continuing, it remains to be seen if the Hitman will call it a day on his Test career very soon. Apart from his poor form, Sharma’s captaincy has also cast aspersions on his future in Tests, with reports hinting at the stalwart plans on announcing his retirement should India fail to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. It looks like that time is not too far now.
