‘Do you want the first one?’: Steve Smith’s message to Khawaja to pop opener surprise

Smith announced he'd be moving up the order soon after David Warner retired from Test cricket.

After David Warner retired, several players’ names were thrown into the hat to replace him. However, what no one was expecting was that Steve Smith would be the one who would leave his spot and replace him. That no one also included his friend and Australia’s designated Test opener, Usman Khawaja.

With the AUS vs WI 1st Test starting on January 17, Smith has revealed the funny text message he sent to Khawaja, revealing that he’ll be his opening partner.

“I randomly sent him a message, I don’t think he knew I was opening yet and I said, ‘Do you want the first one or should I take it?’. He sent back, ‘Opening?’, and was like, ‘Yeah, I’m in’,” Steve Smith revealed to SEN.

Steve Smith also joked that Khawaja still hasn’t confirmed to him who will face the first ball. He further stressed that neither of them was really concerned about who would face the opening ball.

“We actually haven’t decided who is taking the first one yet, but after I got out first ball the other night (in the BBL) I was like ‘Uz, maybe you should take it’.”

“We’re not fussed. It doesn’t matter when you face your first ball; whether you’re opening or batting at four or whatever, it’s all the same.”
