During the second Day of the match, he had a chat with the broadcasters about his retirement rumours. On being asked if he is going to retire now, Rohit denied the claims. instead, he hilariously said, “Mai sensible hu, do bacchon ka baap hu, I know mujhe kya chahiye” (I am a sensible guy, I have two kids, I know what do I need and how to take decisions).
Rohit Sharma on retirement
After Rohit Sharma dropped himself from the Sydney Test, sure to poor show in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, there has been speculation that the 37-year-old is going to retire from Test cricket. “As I’ve said before, this is not a retirement decision, nor am I stepping aside for anyone. There’s no decision like that from my end. I am out of this game now because circumstances didn’t align. There’s no guarantee I’ll still be sitting out after five months, just as there’s no guarantee I’ll be playing again in two months. Every minute, every second, every day—life keeps changing.” he said.
Rohit Sharma also commented on the people speculating about his retirement from the format. “At the same time, I have to be realistic. I’m not someone sitting with a mic, a laptop, or a pen whose words change nothing for us. We’ve played this game for years, and we understand it deeply. Can anyone else decide when we should play, when we should rest, or how long we should stay out? I am a sensible, mature man—a father of two children. I know what I need in my life.” he added.
Rohit Sharma on Sam Konstas
On Day 1, a heated argument between Jasprit Bumrah and Australian opener Sam Konstas grabbed attention as tempers flared. Known for his calm demeanour, Bumrah lost his cool after Konstas made comments from the non-striker’s end. The wicket of Usman Khawaja on the last ball saw a display of unity from the Indian team, with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul joining Bumrah. Rohit Sharma also reflected on this incident.
“Our boys are silent only till a particular time. If you are going to poke them, then they will retaliate. We all are here to play cricket. Please don’t do such nonsense. These antics don’t look nice. Our boys are classy. We focus on our task, and at that moment, it was important to take a couple of wickets to keep pressure on Australia when the morning session began.” said Rohit.
