Fresh injuries to MS Dhoni mar Chennai Super Kings, Did CSK make a mistake by retaining MS Dhoni for IPL 2024?

Chennai Super Kings stand third in the IPL 2024 Points Table. But MS Dhoni‘s recent injury crisis will pose a major problem for CSK. Dhoni has suffered a muscle tear which has greatly limited his movements, but Dhoni aims to carry on. So now the pertinent question rises – Did CSK make a mistake by retaining Dhoni for IPL 2024?

Just before the start of IPL 2024, MS Dhoni gave up his captaincy. As a result, the Yellow Army decided to appoint Ruturaj Gaikwad as the new skipper of CSK. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni continued to serve as a faithful servant to the club and also as a mentor to the new CSK skipper.

Mistake by CSK?

MS Dhoni’s batting stats are quite decent in IPL 2024 especially given that he is 42-years of age. 110 runs with 7 not outs from 9 innings, an average of 55 and a strike rate of 225 speaks highly for the big finisher. But MS Dhoni’s injuries have constantly demoted him down the order.

While he still remains able in his keeping abilities, his batting time has been strictly limited. Ahead of the season, Dhoni underwent a surgery on his knee to play this edition of the IPL.

But with Dhoni likely playing the last edition of IPL, it can be safely said that Chennai Super Kings didn’t make any mistake in retaining the former Indian skipper. Not only does he continues to be the X-factor in the team, but also a big mentor for the players. The job is not over after passing on the baton, Dhoni has been carefully guiding and grooming Ruturaj Gaikwad to be an able captain to successfully lead the side.

Dhoni’s mentorship role in the field would be over if CSK go on to lift this year’s title. Not only, will CSK defend the title, but also win it for a record 6th time. And with the mega auction coming up next season, Dhoni can finally rest easy and hung up his boots.
