Did Chappell saga end Yuvraj Singh’s captaincy hopes? India’s World Cup hero responds

Yuvraj Singh claimed the Greg Chappell-Sachin Tendulkar saga hampered his captaincy chances as he paid the price for standing up for his teammate.

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has opened up on why he was never made the captain of the Indian Cricket Team despite being a senior. In a conversation with another ex-Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, Yuvraj revealed what went on behind the scenes and why MS Dhoni was given India’s captaincy instead of him.

Yuvraj Singh claimed the Greg Chappell-Sachin Tendulkar saga hampered his captaincy chances as he paid the price for standing up for his teammate, something that some of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials didn’t take too kindly. However, Yuvraj also asserted that he had no regrets about taking the stand and claimed he will do it again if the same situation arises.

During Yuvraj’s conversation with Sanjay Manjrekar, Manjrekar asked, “Did you have a captaincy aspiration?” to which Yuvraj said, “Oh definitely.”

“I was supposed to be the captain. But when the Greg Chappell issue happened, it was either Chappell or Sachin (Tendulkar). I was probably the only player to support my teammate at that point of time. Some of the BCCI officials didn’t like that. It was said that they should make anybody the captain but me. This is what I’ve heard, I’m not sure how true this is,” Yuvraj Singh said.

Yuvraj then went on to explain how the final curtains were drawn on his captaincy aspirations.

“I was removed from vice-captaincy all of a sudden, Sehwag was not in the team. Out of nowhere, Mahi (Mahendra Singh Dhoni) became the captain for the 2007 World Cup. The decision went against me. But I have no regrets, today if the same thing happens, I will again support my teammate,” Yuvraj Singh added.
