Did captain Babar Azam pass the buck for Pakistan’s shameful T20 World Cup show?

Captain Babar Azam clarified after the PAK vs IRE match, that it wasn't him alone, who was responsible for Pakistan's dismal show in T20 World Cup.

Not only did Pakistan cricket team posted embarrassing defeats against USA & India in the ongoing T20 World Cup, but they also struggled to chase down 107 in PAK vs IRE on Sunday. Of course the Babar Azam-led side were ousted in the first round itself. Undoubtedly some hard questions were asked from the skipper after Pakistan’s last league match.

It seems like in one of the questions, Babar Azam was portrayed as the villain for the loss, but the latter was quick to point out that it was a team effort that brought these results, and he alone could not have filled in for the other players’ failure. Talking at the post-match conference, Babar said, “We lost as a team and didn’t play as a team. We didn’t lose due to any one person. Like you’re pointing out that it’s because of the captain, I can’t go and play for everyone.

“There are 11 players in the team, and every player has a role, which is why they are here for the World Cup. I accept that we didn’t play well as a team,” he added.

As is the norm in Pakistan, now captain Babar Azam is at the risk of being removed from captaincy. He was first removed from the role after Pakistan’s first-round loss in the World Cup 2023, but was handed back the reigns of the team after Shaheen Afridi lost a series vs New Zealand 1-4. Nonetheless, Babar has left the decision to the PCB.

“When I left captaincy (previously), I felt that I shouldn’t be captain any more and announced it myself. When PCB gave it back, that was their decision. Now we’ll go back and have a discussion about what all has happened here. If I leave captaincy again then I will inform everyone. For now, I haven’t thought about it and the decision is up to PCB,” he said.
