Despite a hard-fought race, WV Raman gracefully congratulates Gautam Gambhir on becoming head coach

After a two-way tussle for the post of India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir has come out on top, defeating WV Raman and becoming India's new head coach in all three formats

India’s former opener, Woorkeri Raman, congratulated Gautam Gambhir after the BCCI announced the two-time IPL-winning captain as India’s head coach across all formats. Raman recently tweeted on X, saying, “Congrats Gautam Gambhir and all the very best to you.” It is noteworthy to add that along with Gambhir, WV Raman was also one who was shortlisted but unable to proceed further.

CAC selects Gambhir over Raman

The Cricket Advisory Committee, which includes former cricketers Mr. Ashok Malhotra, Mr. Jatin Paranjpe, and Ms. Sulakshana Naik, selected Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach of Team India (Senior Men) without facing any opposition. Speculation had already been there when we witnessed several visuals of Jay Shah meeting Gautam Gambhir after KKR’s triumph in IPL 2024.

But at one point, Gambhir’s appointment saw a bit of a tussle when WV Raman, who, as mentioned, was also shortlisted, delivered a wonderful presentation on how he would lead India. However, Gambhir expectedly cleared him out. It is also important to note that, unlike Gambhir, Raman has a decent share of experience as a coach. He was the batting coach at the National Cricket Academy and also served as the head coach of the India women’s national team from December 2018 to 2021.
