Deserved! ICC names Jasprit Bumrah as Player of the month for December

Jasprit Bumrah, Dane Paterson, and Pat Cummins were nominated for the Player of the Month award for December.

Of course it had to be! Jasprit Bumrah has been officially named the Player of the Month for December by the ICC. He had a phenomenal Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), where he single-handedly carried India in the entire series. The BGT series, that started on November 24, saw utter dominance by Bumrah, who took 32 wickets at an unheard average of 13.06.

Jasprit Bumrah gets December; next the main 2024 award?

Bumrah won India the T20 World Cup 2024 and was the highest wicket-taker of the year in international cricket, taking 86 wickets at an average of 13.76. His economy of 3.06 is also something incredible, considering he played the entire T20 World Cup 2024. Bumrah deservingly won the Player of the Month award for December but is in the reckoning for the Men’s Best Player of the Year (2024) as well. He is among the nominees for the Men’s Best Test player as well.

What a tour it was for Jasprit Bumrah! He was on fire from the very start, and his brilliance was a joy to watch. Who can forget his standout performance in Adelaide, where he picked up four crucial wickets to keep India in the game? He followed that up with an absolute masterclass in Brisbane, where his six wickets in the first innings left Australia reeling. And if that wasn’t enough, he added three more scalps in the second innings to finish with a nine-wicket match haul!

His efforts in Brisbane were instrumental in saving the match, which was threatened by rain. And even though India didn’t win, Bumrah’s performance kept them alive in the series. He carried that momentum into the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, where he delivered yet another stellar performance. His four wickets in the first innings were a rare bright spot in an otherwise lacklustre bowling effort by the Indian team.

And then, in the second innings, he produced a magical five-wicket haul to bowl Australia out for 234. It was a truly heroic effort, but unfortunately, India’s batting couldn’t match up, and they ended up losing by 184 runs. Despite the loss, Bumrah’s performances were a shining light on an otherwise tough tour for India.

As far as the Women’s Best Player of the Month is concerned for December, Australia’s Annabel Sutherland. Sutherland also wins her second ICC Women’s Player of the Month prize, overcoming Smriti Mandhana and Nonkululeko Mlaba in the global vote.
