The Delhi Capitals (DC), a powerhouse in the Indian Premier League (IPL), might soon claim the title of the richest team in the league.
According to Bloomberg sources, the franchise owner, JSW GMR Cricket Pvt. Ltd., is in talks to secure a massive loan of Rs 830 crore (between $90 million and $100 million) through private credit.
This hefty loan, if acquired, would be a game-changer for the Delhi Capitals. The funds, earmarked for general corporate purposes, would be backed by the franchise itself, including its valuable broadcasting rights and lucrative sponsorship deals.
Delhi Capitals following global trend
Delhi Capitals wouldn’t be the first in the world of sports to leverage private credit for growth. Chelsea FC, for instance, recently secured a similar loan from Ares Management Corp.
This trend reflects the increasing attractiveness of sports franchises as investment opportunities, fueled by the immense popularity of leagues like the IPL.
Beyond cricket
JSW GMR’s sports portfolio extends far beyond the Delhi Capitals.
They own the Dubai Capitals in the International League T20, the India Capitals in the Legends League Cricket, and the UP Yoddhas in the Pro Kabaddi League.
Additionally, they have a stake in the Telugu Yoddhas of the upcoming Ultimate Kho Kho League.
DC capitalizing on IPL boom
The potential loan for the Delhi Capitals comes at a time when the IPL is experiencing explosive growth, both domestically and internationally.
The league’s viewership numbers and sponsorship deals are soaring, making franchises like Delhi Capitals even more valuable assets.
Delhi Capitals: Financial powerhouse in making
With this potential influx of funds, the Delhi Capitals are poised to become a major financial force in the IPL. The additional resources could not only strengthen the team on the field but also bolster their off-field operations, solidifying their position as a top contender in the league for years to come.
However, it’s important to note that the loan is still under negotiation, and its finalization is not guaranteed. Nevertheless, the mere discussion of such a significant financial move highlights the immense potential of the Delhi Capitals and the ever-growing allure of the IPL as a global sporting phenomenon.
