Delhi Capitals rope in World Cup-winning head coach, but IPL 2025 captaincy mystery continues

Delhi Capitals changed their whole coaching setup with Hemang Badani replacing Ricky Ponting as head coach and Munaf Patel being named the bowling coach.

The Delhi Capitals (DC) have roped in England’s men’s cricket team’s former head coach, Matthew Mott, as their assistant coach for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. This will be Mott’s second gig in the league. He was the assistant coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from 2008 to 2009 as well.

Delhi Capitals sign Matthew Mott as assistant coach

Mott has an exceptional resume. He was the Australian women’s cricket team’s head coach from 2015 to 2022 and won three World Cups (ODI once and T20I twice). Mott has also won the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup with England and also has a 3-year contract with Sydney Sixers as their assistant coach as well.

Motts will join Delhi Capitals’ newly formed coaching setup. The franchise has already brought in Hemang Badani as their head coach, Venugopal Rao as the Director of Cricket, and Munaf Patel as the bowling coach. The only thing left is their captain for the IPL 2025 season.

Delhi Capitals yet to name IPL 2025 captain

DC and KKR are the only teams that haven’t announced their captain yet. Capitals’ have two main candidates: KL Rahul and Axar Patel. The former was Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings captain in the past. He’s also led the India cricket team. The latter was DC’s vice-captain last season and was one of their four retentions before the IPL 2025 auction.
