Mumbai Indians (MI) Women are the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 champions. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side has beaten Delhi Capitals (DC) Women for the second time in the WPL Final and become the first team to win multiple trophies.
In what was a tight WPL 2025 Final at the Brabourne Stadium, DC lost by just 8 runs. They were within winning distance in the last five overs, but Marizanne Kapp’s wicket changed it for them in the end.
Harmanpreet Kaur stands tall while others fall
After already losing the toss, MI had the worst possible start. By the end of the 3rd over, they were 5/1. Not much improved in the next three overs. Having lost Hayley Matthews, Yastika Bhatia ended her woeful WPL 2025 season as well. Scoring 88 runs at 9.77 with a 101.14 strike rate.
Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt steadied the ship. They added 89 runs in 10.2 overs, taking MI from a precarious situation to a solid one. Sciver-Brunt ended her season with a 65.37 average and 152.47 strike rate, winning the orange cap with 523 runs and becoming the first player to score 1,000 runs in WPL.
Harmanpreet carried on, hitting an imperious half-century. But Amelia Kerr and Sajeevan Sajana fell in the 16th over, and DC got back the control again. Like Yastika, neither crossed 100 runs and averaged under 11 runs. Harmanpreet departed for 66 (44), playing yet another clutch knock. A couple of hits from Amanjot Kaur and Kamalini Gunalan took MI to 149.
Marizanne Kapp’s all-rounder brilliance, not enough
DC captain Meg Lanning started hot, but Sciver-Brunt sent her back in the second over to keep MI alive. Shabnim Ismail joined the party in the very next over, trapping Shafali Verma in front of the wicket. Both openers were gone, and MI was back in the game.
By the 10th over, DC lost two more wickets as spinners Amelia Kerr and Saika Ishaque took control. Jemimah Rodrigues looked good and was taking the game forward after DC fell behind in the run rate. She took Kerr on but also perished in the process.
After 11 overs, Delhi was 67/5. Chasing 150 looked virtually impossible. Marizanne Kapp decided she’d attack, and it seemed to be working, only for a miscommunication to happen between her and Sarah Bryce. The Scottish wicketkeeper was run out, and an already tough task got even more difficult.
But Kapp was unfazed. She continued to go for her shots. It didn’t matter who was bowling; the South African looked determined. She brought the equation down from 66 runs from 42 balls to 35 runs from 24 balls. Ismail’s tight 17th over led to Kapp getting dismissed in the 18th over by Sciver-Brunt.
The game was in MI’s control now. Shikha Pandey departed for a golden duck, and the little hope DC had was shattered. Niki Prasad kept them in the game but it was way too much for her in the end.
