Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting in talks with MLC team for coaching stint

The Washington Freedom, who finished third in the inaugural MLC season, could benefit immensely from Ricky Ponting leadership.

The Australian cricket icon and Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting is mulling a return to the coaching arena, this time across the Pacific Ocean. He’s in negotiations with the Washington Freedom, a Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise, to potentially lead them in the upcoming season.

MLC, backed by prominent Indian Premier League (IPL) ownership groups, concluded its inaugural year in 2023 with encouraging results. Now, Ponting’s potential involvement adds another layer of star power to the budding American T20 league.

While the talks are still in their early stages, Ponting seems intrigued by the opportunity. “There have been some discussions,” he revealed to SEN 1170, acknowledging the ongoing negotiations. “The timing works well for me,” he added, highlighting the MLC’s schedule aligning perfectly with his existing commitments.

With the Delhi Capitals in IPL and T20 World Cup occupying his earlier months, the July-August window of the MLC presents a compelling chance for another coaching stint. “It’s a big decision,” he admitted, “but I enjoy coaching and working with top players.”

Ricky Ponting has coached Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians

Ricky Ponting’s coaching credentials are well-established. His six-year stint with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, coupled with brief involvements with the Australian national team, showcase his experience and expertise. He has also coached Mumbai Indians during 2014-2016 in IPL.

The Washington Freedom, who finished third in the inaugural MLC season, could benefit immensely from Ricky Ponting leadership. His proven ability to nurture talent and strategize for victories would be invaluable assets for the American franchise.

With the 2024 MLC season kicking off in July, cricket fans around the world will be watching closely to see if Ricky Ponting takes the leap and embarks on this exciting new chapter in his cricketing journey. Will he bring his championship-winning Midas touch to American shores? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: Ponting’s potential involvement in the MLC adds a thrilling dimension to the league’s growth and global reach.
