Ponting reveals potential DC captain if Rishabh Pant can’t make it to IPL 2024

Pant has been out of action since December 2022 and missed the entire IPL 2023 season. Now, as he looks to make his comeback, all eyes are on his fitness as a batter and wicketkeeper.

Rishabh Pant wants to play IPL 2024 and that’s the news every fan has been waiting to hear. However, considering the severity of his injuries, there is a chance that he might not be available. In that case, who leads Delhi Capitals? DC head coach Ricky Ponting is still unsure if Pant can return to assume captaincy. But if he doesn’t, there is an option ready in David Warner, who also captained the team last season.

“Rishabh is very confident that he’s going to be right to play. In what capacity, we’re not quite sure yet. But in saying that, we’re only six weeks away from the first game as well. So we’re not sure if we’ll get wicketkeeping out of him this year,” Ricky Ponting said during a press conference after being appointed as the Washington Freedom’s head coach in Major League Cricket (MLC).

Who will replace Rishabh Pant?

Ricky Ponting revealed that Rishabh Pant is ‘very confident’ that he’ll not only return but also play the whole season. However, a journalist stumped the former Australian skipper, asking him who’ll lead the Capitals if Pant is not available.

The Delhi Capitals head coach confirmed that last year’s captain, David Warner, will replace Rishabh Pant as the designated skipper in case the wicketkeeper batter isn’t available.

He expanded on Rishabh Pant’s potential return and expressed uncertainty over his fitness as a batter and wicketkeeper. He said:

“You would have seen all the social-media stuff, he’s up and about and running well. But in saying that we’re only six weeks away from the first game as well. So we’re not sure if we’ll get wicketkeeping out of him this year.”
