Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli made a noteworthy comeback to the Indian T20I squad after an absence of more than a year. The experienced duo’s last appearance in T20Is was in India’s semi-final encounter against England during the T20 World Cup 2022.
Their return was unveiled through the announcement of their participation in the 3-match IND vs AFG T20I series, serving as India’s final international T20 assignment before the eagerly awaited T20 World Cup 2024. The global tournament is slated for June this year, in Caribbean islands and the United States of America.
Former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta provided valuable insights, highlighting the positive impact these seasoned players bring to the game, such as stability and experience.
Dasgupta emphasized the significance of their presence, acknowledging the duo’s ability to provide a stabilizing force and contribute with their wealth of experience, factors that can significantly bolster the team’s performance in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
“Looking through the angle, it is a good thing if you are expecting a score of 160-170 as Rohit and Kohli bring stability and experience to the table. The only criticism has been for the approach, but have already seen the clarity in approach in the ODI WC” said Deep Dasgupta.
Since November 2022, Hardik Pandya has held the captaincy reins for the Indian side in the shortest format of international cricket. During his absence, Suryakumar Yadav took on the captaincy role and showcased commendable leadership in series against Australia and South Africa. However, with the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, India faces the task of reshuffling their lineup once again as they prepare for the T20 World Cup 2024.
