The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially accepted Babar Azam’s resignation as white-ball skipper on Wednesday. The batter had revealed that he had communicated his desire to step down as captain a month earlier, following Pakistan’s debacle at the T20 World Cup. The PCB had a rather straightforward response to Azam resigning as captain, noting that his decision was a reflection of his personal desire.
PCB’s blunt take on Babar Azam’s resignation
Babar Azam was reportedly offered to continue as the ODI skipper but the star had refused. The star batter has had a poor run for nearly a year now. His decision to step down from the leadership position is aimed at enhancing his personal growth and shedding the workload of captaincy.
“Although the PCB had backed Babar Azam as the white-ball captain, his decision to step down reflects his desire to focus more on making a greater impact as a player,” the PCB said in a statement.

Why did Babar Azam resign as Pakistan captain?
As per Cricket Pakistan, Babar Azam felt increasingly disconnected with his teammates following the T20 World Cup, forcing him to take the decision to step down as skipper. Additionally, the star batter also reportedly felt undervalued with the team. It is pertinent to point out that Babar was reinstated as the skipper just before the T20 WC after having stepped down from the role in 2023 after the ODI World Cup.
Babar Azam took to social media platform X to explain the rationale behind stepping down as skipper. He claimed that the burden of captaincy added to a significant change in his workload and expressed his interest to focus on his batting and form instead. Additionally, he said that the move was aimed at ensuring his personal growth while he vowed to continue contributing for the team across all formats of the game.
