Decision on Shakib Al Hasan expected after current Test match, says BCB President Faruque Ahmed

Shakib Al Hasan is currently in Pakistan for the test series, after the legal notice from the Bangladesh SC, the all-rounder might go back to Bangladesh after the first Test.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed said on Saturday (August 24) that the board will decide on Shakib Al Hasan’s future after the current Test match against Pakistan concludes. Shakib was accused in a murder case filed on Thursday (August 22) by Rafiqul Islam, the father of Rubel, a garment factory worker who was killed on August 5 in Dhaka’s Adabor.

Following the allegations, Supreme Court lawyer Shajib Mahmood Alam sent a legal notice to the BCB on behalf of Advocate Md Rafinur Rahman. The notice, sent via email and registered post, demands Shakib’s immediate removal from all forms of cricket.

ICC rules and regulations

Accroding to cricbuzz, the notice indicates that Shakib’s involvement in a legal case conflicts with International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations, making his continuation in the national team problematic. It also urges efforts to bring Shakib back to Bangladesh to assist in the murder investigation. The ICC is to be notified about these developments.

Decision to be made

Faruque, after meeting with some board directors at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, stated that a decision regarding Shakib would be made before the second Test against Pakistan, scheduled for August 30 in Rawalpindi.

Faruque emphasized that, as of now, they have only received the FIR, and further investigation is required before any charges are made. He indicated that Shakib’s relationship with the BCB is defined by his contract as a player. Faruque also noted that the ongoing Test match is the immediate focus and that decisions will be taken after its conclusion.

Time to deliberate before second Test

With the second Test match starting on August 30, Faruque mentioned that there is a window to consider the situation and decide on Shakib’s involvement. He reiterated that withdrawing Shakib mid-Test is not feasible, and any action will be based on the developments in the coming days.
