‘Death threats’ is the cost of criticising Virat Kohli in India, Simon Doull finds out the hard way

Simon Doull was among the few who chastised Virat Kohli for his poor strike-rate during the first half of IPL 2024.

Virat Kohli has fans far and wide in the country as well as oversees. Many cricket lovers see Kohli as the legend modern-day cricket and will go to any lengths to defend their idol. So it is no surprise that anyone criticising Kohli will get immense backlash from his fans. Ambati Rayudu recently found out how far Kohli’s fans can go to defend the Indian batter when the former CSK batter’s daughter received death threats. Now, former Kiwi pacer-turned commentator Simon Doull has revealed that he has received death threats for saying anything remotely negative about Virat Kohli.

Strike rate issue blown out of proportion

Simon Doull was among the few who chastised Virat Kohli for his poor strike-rate during the first half of IPL 2024. When Kohli took ten balls to go from 42 to 50 in an RCB vs LSG match, Doull questioned his strike rate, implying that he had played for personal records.

One slightly negative remark leads to massive reaction

He’s too good to worry about what if he gets out. He’s too good a player, and that was always my point around him. I said a thousand great things about Virat Kohli, but I say one thing that might be slightly negative or construed to be negative, I get death threats,” Simon Doull said during a chat with Dinesh Karthik on Cricbuzz.

Kohli will now switch allegiance to the Indian jersey when he takes the field for his country in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Although most of the Indian contingent have reached USA, Kohli is supposed to travel from Mumbai in a day or two.
