David Warner’s replacement found? Jake Fraser-McGurk’s loss in Matthew Short’s gain

While Jake Fraser-McGurk was dropped after flopping against Scotland, Matthew Short made most of his opportunity in ENG vs AUS 1st T20I

Jake Fraser-McGurk’s loss in Matthew Short’s gain! Yes you read that right. Short pulled off an impressive performance against England in ENG vs AUS 1st T20I, making his case to be the perfect replacement for David Warner as Australia’s opener. The Aussie provided a glimpse of his ability to be destructive at the top of the order, adding 86 runs along with Travis Head in the powerplay.

Why Short could pip McGurk to be Australia’s new T20I opener

Australia have been on the hunt for a new opener ever since David Warner’s retirement following the team’s exit from T20 World Cup. While the team did bet on Jake Fraser-McGurk initially, it did not pay off as the youngster flopped.

There’s no doubt about Jake Fraser-McGurk’s ability to be explosive at the top of the order. It has been witnessed multiple times in various leagues across the world but sadly it hasn’t been the case so far in T20Is. The youngster has been unimpressive so far in the international arena, managing to score just 17 runs in three innings for Australia. He was dropped from ENG vs AUS 1st T20I after failing twice against Scotland, paving way for Matthew Short’s inclusion.

Short made the most of his opportunity as he went ballistic in the powerplay in the game at Southampton. A whirlwind 41-run knock off 26 deliveries from Short was just a preview of perhaps what was going to come in the future, if the selectors decide to stick with Short. In comparison with McGurk, Short is slightly more experienced, having played 10 T20Is. But it is the runs that matter. He has 224 runs to his name so far of which 127 runs have come as an opener.
