World Cup 2023: David Warner and Travis Head not only smashed the Kiwis in the AUS vs NZ clash but also the record for the highest score in powerplay in the ODI World Cup. The pair played at a run rate of 11.80 to score a mammoth 118 runs in the first 10 overs of the match. The Southpaw duo broke New Zealand’s 8-year-old record, as Australia took the upper hand in the highly anticipated contest in Dharamshala.
Team | Opposition | Score | Venue | Year |
Australia | New Zealand | 118/0 | Dharamshala | 2023 |
New Zealand | England | 116/2 | Wellington | 2015 |
Sri Lanka | South Africa | 94/2 | Delhi | 2023 |
India | Afghanistan | 94/0 | Delhi | 2023 |
India | South Africa | 87/0 | Nagpur | 2011 |
The interesting thing is that this is Head’s first match in the World Cup 2023. The left-hander had suffered an injury to his hand in September and had been out of action since. However, the aggressive opener decided to start his maiden ODI World Cup with a bang.
While Warner outscored Head, 65 to his 50 runs, Head had a superior strike rate which is even more impressive when one realizes that he had not even played for the last two months.
