David Warner terms Cricket Australia’s leadership ban on him ‘bizarre’

Warner, along with Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft, were banned in March, 2018 over the ball-tampering scandal against South Africa that rocked the cricketing world.

Australian cricketer David Warner has opened on the leadership ban imposed upon him by Cricket Australia in 2018. Warner, who recently played his farewell Test against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground, called the ban ‘bizarre’.

Warner, along with Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft, were banned in March, 2018 over the ball-tampering scandal against South Africa that rocked the cricketing world.

Warner rejoined Australia in 2019 but was still banned from captaining the national team. The southpaw, however, is eligible to take charge of the national side in future.

Speaking to Code Sports, Warner termed the ban as ‘bizarre’. “What’s the difference between captaining and coaching? You’ve got more responsibility as a coach, wouldn’t you think so? I don’t know, I’m not sure, I don’t know how to answer,” Warner said.

The mystery behind David Warner and his allegedly stolen baggy green ahead of his farewell Test has finally been revealed.

“It’s been five years, and I still don’t know how to answer the question. It’s just something that’s hard to get my head around. Apparently, I will be able to coach if allowed to in Australia. But I can’t captain. So yeah, I’m not sure what it is. It’s under contract with Australia. It’s a leadership position, so I’m not sure; I just don’t know. It’s very bizarre,” he added.
