David Warner has been named Karachi Kings (KK) captain for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 season. The Australian opener who hasn’t played in the tournament before was bagged for $300,000 (Rs 2.56 crore) at the auction in January. He had entered his name into the PSL draft after going unsold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.
Apart from the IPL since 2009, this will be the first time Warner won’t play in the league. Not counting the 2018 season, as he was banned by Cricket Australia due to a ball-tampering scandal. At 38, Warner knows he doesn’t have much cricket left in him and wants to make the most it.
David Warner to make PSL debut as Karachi Kings captain
Since retiring from international cricket in June 2024, Warner has been playing in franchise leagues all over the globe. He would have played in the IPL, as the PSL clashes with the tournament this time, but after going unsold in Jeddah, he decided he’d play in Pakistan.
He was one of the biggest names in the PSL draft and was KK’s first pick in the platinum section. Franchise owner Salman Iqbal announced that Warner will replace Shan Masood as the captain for the PSL 2025 season, about three weeks before the tournament starts.
“We are thrilled to welcome David Warner to the Karachi Kings family as our new captain. His track record as a leader and match-winner aligns perfectly with our vision for HBL PSL 10. At the same time, we extend our deepest appreciation to Shan Masood for his exceptional contributions last season. His efforts were pivotal in building a strong foundation, and we look forward to his continued role as a key player in the squad,” said Karachi Kings Owner Salman Iqbal.
