Chennai Super Kings’ primary problem has been the bowling in the powerplay. CSK have picked up only two wickets in three matches in the powerplay. That shows how badly they are missing Deepak Chahar, who was their go-to bowler to pick up wickets in the powerplay. Chahar had the most wickets in the powerplay with 10 scalps in IPL 2021.

CSK bowling stats in powerplay (first six overs)

Vs KKR: 43/0

Vs LSG: 55/0

Vs PBKS: 72/2

While that problem is expected to remain until Deepak Chahar returns from injury, Mukesh Choudhary is likely to benched after two expensive spells (0/39 vs LSG and 1/52 vs PBKS). In his place, Rajvardhan Hangargekar is likely to come in as he could provide the batting solidity.

Mukesh Choudhary is likely to be dropped

CSK Playing XI vs SRH: Why should Hangargekar get a go?

  • Mukesh Choudhary has been ineffective.
  • He has conceded 39 and 52 in the last two matches for just one wicket.
  • While KM Asif is the other alternative and an experienced option, Rajvardhan Hangargekar could give CSK the batting depth.
  • Tushar Deshpande is unlikely to get a chance in the next match.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s form BIG concern – Put aside bowling for a moment, CSK’s batting too hasn’t been great either. Even though Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu besides former skipper MS Dhoni have shown some prowess, CSK have again struggled with the bat in the powerplay. Only once in three matches that they have managed to cross 50-run mark but has lost wickets in all three including four wickets against Punjab Kings.

The major reason for that is Ruturaj Gaikwad’s off-form. Last season, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis did the heavy work with the bat with the two finishing with 635 and 633 runs respectively. With Du Plessis gone, CSK haven’t yet managed to secure the opening spot. Robin Uthappa for now looks the best bet to accommodate Moeen Ali at the expense of Devon Conway.

CSK Batting stats in powerplay:

Vs KKR: 35/2

Vs LSG 73/1

Vs PBKS: 27/4

That shows how important the role Ruturaj Gaikwad plays in CSK batting. With scores of 0, 1 & 1, he is struggling and he needs to hit the top gear before it’s too late for CSK.
