WPL 2023: Olympic gold medalist and the first-ever Indian Athlete to win a medal at the Diamond League, Neeraj Chopra attended the eliminator between Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz on March 24. Ahead of WPL final the Javelin ace named MI skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and DC opener Shafali Verma, alongside RCB captain Smriti Mandhana as his favourite players in WPL 2023. Chopra also spoke about his experience of meeting the women’s cricket team and more. Neeraj Chopra, arguably the greatest Indian athlete ever, has recently developed a strong interest in cricket. Chopra was recently spotted inspiring the Indian U-19 cricket team in South Africa for the World Cup. In a video shared by WPL on its official Twitter handle, the Javelin thrower said, “I felt great. It was the first time I met the Indian Women’s Cricket Team and it felt great to watch India win the World Cup in South Africa.”

When asked to choose his three favourite players, he named MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Delhi Capitals’ Shafali Verma, and Bangalore’s skipper Smriti Mandhana.

“Today, I’ve come again to meet them and it feels so good to see the environment of the tournament, people supporting women’s cricket, the kind of matches being played and the competition…it’s so good to witness,” said Chopra.

When asked about his thoughts on WPL, the 25-year-old said, “In the Olympics, both men and women compete but it feels so good to see women’s cricket get recognition and support from people.”

Chopra also urged people to support the players in their tough times and said, “We cannot always perform well and that is when we need support from people the most.” “The athletes themselves go through hard times. Keep supporting them. Such things happen in sports,” he added.

Talking about the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League, Neeraj Chopra stated that he is proud that women’s cricket is finally getting the recognition that it is well and truly deserved in India.

Meanwhile, in the match between Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz, Harmanpreet-led Indians defeated Alyssa Healy-led Warriorz by 72 runs. Now Harmanpreet and Co. will take on Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals in the final of the first edition of the Women’s Premier League.
