Stuart Broad announces shock retirement from Test cricket during Ashes 5th Test

Stuart Broad is the only second fast bowler to bag 600 Test wickets. In 17-year-long playing career, he has bagged 845 wickets across all formats.

Writings were there on the wall; now it’s a reality, although it is a shock for many. England’s star pacer Stuart Broad has called it quits, bringing down curtains on a 17-year-long illustrious career. The 37-year-old was batting along with James Anderson in the 5th ENG vs AUS Ashes 2023 Test at the end of Day 3. And at the end of Day 3’s play, he announced his decision on the post-match show.

“It’s been a wonderful ride. It has been a huge privilege to wear the Nottinghamshire and the England badge as much as I have. And, I’m loving cricket as much as I ever have. It’s been such a wonderful series to be a part of. I’ve always wanted to finish at the top. And this series just feels like it’s been one of the most enjoyable and entertaining I’ve been a part of,” Stuart Broad said.

Stuart Broad has played 167 Test matches, 121 ODIs and 56 T20 Internationals, taking 845 wickets. Broad made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2007. In 167 matches, he has bagged 602 Test wickets. He can add to his tally and finish on a high as Australia will bat again in the 5th Tests.

Apart from teammate James Anderson, Stuart Broad is the only 2nd fast bowler to bag 600 Test wickets. He took his 150th Ashes wicket in his final game at The Oval this week.

“Broad’s ability to deliver crucial spells in critical moments has been his trademark. His career-best figures of 8 for 15 against Australia at Trent Bridge in the 2015 Ashes will be remembered as one of history’s finest spells of fast bowling,” England & Wales Cricket Board said in a statement.

Stuart Broad Careers Stats

The Nottinghamshire bowler leaves international cricket with a number of honours to his name. He is a World Cup winner having won the 2010 T20 World Cup. He has also won four Ashes series.

Stuart Broad was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2016 Birthday Honours list for services to cricket.

“The England & Wales Cricket Board would like to thank Stuart for his incredible dedication and contribution to English Cricket. We wish him well for the remainder of his final Test match and the future,” the ECB added.
