As per reports, Shreyas Iyer is struggling to walk such is the severity of his injury. The middle-order batsman had spent time at the NCA before the Border Gavaskar Trophy and also missed the 1st test due to the same niggle. he played in Delhi and Indore and was set to feature in Ahmedabad before his injury propped up again.

The BCCI medical team sent him for scans and skipper Rohit Sharma revealed the results were not pretty. As things stand, Iyer has been ruled out of the ODI series starting on March 17. The Indian Cricket Board is consulting a specialist regarding the same and Shreyas could miss some games for Kolkata Knight Riders as well. Should surgery be recommended, the KKR captain will have up to 3 months of action.

A surgery would rule him out of the entire IPL and also the World Test Championship Final. India made it to the summit clash courtesy of their 2-1 Test series win over Australia. The final will be played at the Oval on June 7. Iyer joins Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Prasidh Krishna on India’s injury list.

Shreyas Iyer Injury Update:

  • He was immediately taken for scans and did not bat any further in the first innings.
  • From the initial review, Iyer has a recurrence of his back injury that kept him out of the 1st Test.
  • He will now head to NCA for further assessment and rehab.

When asked about Shreyas’ fitness after the 4th Test, Rohit Sharma suggested that it was an unfortunate incident. It was alarming however that the Indian captain had no time frame for his expected return.

“Poor guy… It just was such an unfortunate incident. He had to wait all day to bat and then when the day got over, the issue he had with his back, recurred. He was sent to the hospital to take scans. I don’t know the exact report of the scans, but he does not seem to be doing that well. Obviously, that’s why he’s not present here,” Sharma added.

He said,  “We don’t know the exact status of how long he will take to recover or when he will be back. When it happened, it did not look that great. I hope he recovers quickly and comes back and plays again.”

Iyer’s injury is another example where the National Cricket Academy (NCA) doesn’t come out smelling of roses. The case is particularly concerning after bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna — both of whom have had delayed back surgeries — remain out of action.

BCCI is expectedly frustrated and is losing trust in the Nitin Patel-led Sports Science division at the NCA. While there was a hint at an overhaul of the NCA Sports science team, it may now happen sooner than later.

“It’s frustrating for sure. And it’s not the first time that a player has recurrence of an injury. We should have learned from Bumrah but we did not. Shreyas should have been eased into the team and not rushed to play grinding Test cricket. Hopefully, he will be fit for the ODI series. But it’s difficult to say anything at this point. He had scans and is currently under the medical team’s observation,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.
