No learning from IPL Final chaos, fans need physical tickets for WC matches

Jay Shah has asked all state associations to submit World Cup ticket plans by Tuesday. Following that, ICC and BCCI will jointly launch tickets.

Chaos, mismanagement and fans’ harassment — yet the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not learned. Fans will need physical World Cup 2023 tickets to watch a match. Chaos erupted for IPL 2023 Final ticket sales at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Fans were required to collect physical tickets despite booking them online. And soon, the situation may repeat once again in WC. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that there will be physical tickets and the sale will start soon.

Jay Shah met with representatives from 12 state cricket associations on World Cup 2023 preparations on Thursday. Ticketing was one major point on the agenda. While BCCI has been saying that tickets will be released soon, there is no time frame.

Following the meeting, the BCCI has asked the state associations to prepare plans on ticket management and sales for each game. The associations will now need to come up with plans on complimentary tickets, and pricing for general tickets and corporate boxes. Furthermore, the associations must provide details on how many tickets they can allocate to the BCCI and the ICC based on seating capacity.

World Cup 2023 tickets: No lessons learned

Despite discussions around making the entire ticketing process digital only, BCCI has backed out of the plan. BCCI is afraid that online tickets could lead to duplication and to avoid that, they have decided to continue the existing ticketing model. Although Jay Shah has promised an “elevated” experience for fans, doubts remain.

  • Fans can book online and the ticketing partner will get it delivered at home.
  • Some physical tickets will be available on sale at the stadium box office.
  • Ticket pricing will be dynamic. The pricing will change depending on the match and venue.
